I use this system to avoid the popular chess openings and defenses and thereby limit my study time. As White, I use the English Opening (c4) instead of the most popular and much studied openings: e4, d4 and Nf3. As Black, I respond to d4 with Nf6, an Indian defense. Against e4, I reply with the Sicilian Defense (c5) and its Dragon Variation, if possible, to avoid the popular and strong Ruy Lopez as well as many old but quiet openings that tend to be drawish. Strong players criticize my system because it provides opponents with advance knowledge and preparation, but I consider this shortcoming trivial compared to its advantages. Begin at my English Opening or my defenses against other openings. Note that some variations of the English Opening transform into Queen Gambit lines, but these give White plenty of space to maintain a steady initiative. Variations analyzed are based on play against various levels of Chessmaster program.
