In early America, some measures and measuring instruments did not exist, while those that
existed were irregular and not accepted by all parties,
which resulted in much confusion, argument, and wasted effort. Eventual
standardization of various measures and their instruments contributed significantly to improved
efficiency, and general living standards.
Measurements, precision and standards are grouped by
(1) length, area, and volume, (2) time, and
(3) physical and chemical.
